Block Party – 3 Days To Go

August 18, 2011 by · Comments Off

We’re just 3 Days away from our 2nd Annual Block Party and it’s going to be an impressive day.

After 5 years of talk in the community we held our first event in the Arbutus Walk Greenway in August 2010. Drawing on the success of that event, we’ve decided to make this an annual community building feature of our neighborhood.  This year we will again do a corn roast and have purchased 800 Ears of corn from the Steveston Farmers Market. But in addition to that  we’ve gotten the business community involved and there will be lots of free games and giveaways.

In addition to the corn roast, London Drugswill be coming with their Wheel of Fortune Game with prizes and give aways for the community.  They will also have bottled water to give away.  They will also have face painting for the kids.

Operation Family Identification provides a child identity package for parents and guardians. Supported by Block Parent, Crime Stoppers and the RCMP, Operation Family Identification has provided over half a million identity kits to parents and guardians, free of charge, since the program’s inception in 1984.

The identity kit contains a picture, fingerprints of the child and all of the child’s vital statistics. The parent or guardian retains the only copy of the identity kit. For providing this service, London Drugs has received an award from the Solicitor General of Canada as well as one from the Solicitor General of Alberta.

North Shore Credit Union

NSCU is glad to be in our neighborhood and is excited to participate at this years block party.  They will be bringing their game of ladder ball and will also have prizes and give aways.

BLENZ COFFEE @ Broadway & Maple

Blenz is also coming for the whole day and will have plenty of their finely roasted drip beverages for us to enjoy.

IGA MARKETPLACE

IGA has been kind enough to supply us with a $300 Store Credit to purchase serviettes, condiments and whatever else we need.

Tapestry At The Okeefe

The great people over at Tapestry will supplying 500 Hot Dogs and Lemonade

Gramercy Grill

Susan and Trevor from the Gramercy will be onsite with Hors d’oervres Let’s hope they have those lemon tarts like last year.

Provident Security

Provident is famous for keeping neighborhoods safe but they are also known for their enourmous 20′ X 40′ Fun Slide.  It’s going to be a riot.

Tisol Pet Supplies

Bring your dog (on leash) and join in a fun and funny dog pageant/decorating event!  There will be dog cookies for all complements of Tisol.  From  3:00 pm to 4:00 pm,  a dog walkway will be set up on the greenway in front of Tapestry at the O’Keefe.  Dogs can compete in such fun categories as Best Smile, Waggiest Tail, Best Hairdo, Best Costume  and maybe even- Best Master – Dog Look Alike!  Come in and join or just come by for the good laughs.

We’ve come along way from just talking about this to actually putting on a great event with both the resdents and the business community coming together.  Thanks for supporting this new feature of our community.

Blk Party Update 3

Dianne and Kathleen met last sunday and cut out lots of big paper flowers and butterfly decorations.

We are asking that  a person from each building hand them out to people in their building.

Everyone can then decorate them as they like and hang them up on the day.

We need everyone  to spread the word about decorating their balconies on the theme of SUMMER FUN.

Thanks to all who came out last night to participate in organizing our 1st Annual Block Party.  The Attendance record is attached as Volunteer Roster with each individual’s email and phone number.
Below is a summary of what we discussed:

  • Permits:
Steve Macfarlane will spearhead this.  The City normally requires not less than 8 weeks to issue permits for events like our but Steve has some connections that may be able to shorten this cycle since we are only 5 weeks away.  (Lesson for next year … get the permit now)  Also, Sport BC offers an insurance policy for $30 for event like these to limit liability of the organizers.    Jennifer from the O’Keefe will look into how they may be able to help with the permitting process as they have been through this before.
  • Kids’ Activities:
Ideas include face painting, sidewalk chalk art and having a table set up where kid can colour pieces of a mosaic.  Provident Security will provide a giant inflatable slide (20’ X 10’) and the staffing to run it.
  • Pet Activities:
Clare will check with Tisol about sponsorship and organize the pet activities.
  • Food / BBQ / Beverage
There will be no food or beverage sales as this changes the nature of the event.  We will do a corn roast and provide the corn and  BBQs.  Residents will treat the event as “Pick Nick” and can use the BBQs to cook their own meats.  As for the supply of BBQs and Coolers, Jennifer will check with O’Keefe what equipment they have and possibly supply BBQs and Cooks, Cathy will check with Kerrisdale Lumber about their “”Big BBQ” and if we cant   find one from these “Sponsors” we can rent from Lonsdale Rentals.  Heather will check with The Gramercy Grill about what capacity they wish to participate and will also check with the Farmers Market People about getting the corn.  Howard will talk to IGA and London Drugs if they would like to sponsor as we would love to have Ice Cream available.
  • Games
it’s generally agreed that residents who want to play games will bring their own toys.  We’ll bring a Bace Ball set, others will bring croquet, Frisbees, etc…..
  • Entertainment / Music:
Howard has called a couple of radio stations to inquire about their interest in doing a “Live Broadcast”  if we don’t get any response for the radio stations, we’ll set up a small PA with music.
  • Decorations:
Frances is well experienced in setting up decorations for this type of event and will take on this project.  Ideas include getting the units facing the greenway to hang coordinated streamers from their balconies.  Lindsay Wilkinson has offered to contribute Sutton Balloons and The O’Keefe may have the Helium tanks and resources to fill them.  We also talked about getting “Hello My Name Is” tags and getting everyone to wear a name tag.
  • Budget:
This doesn’t need to be a big budget event.  The purpose is to have a great first party, get the neighbourhood interacting socially and use this as a springboard to next year.  The goal will be to get a contribution of $100 per strata to cover Miscellaneous expenses.  To that end, Howard has secured “Not More Than” $500 from LMS 3170 to get things rolling.  It’s also suggested that we have a signup sheet for people who want to volunteer to get next year’s party going ….
  • Clean Up Crew:
Cathy Lepard, owner of Clean Sites Removal has stepped up to lead the clean-up crew, she’s got a truck, 12 garbage cans and a couple of brooms.  Cathy is just one person however, so we will all participate in making sure the event ends like “No Trace Camping!”

Thanks again to all who showed up.  We’ll have a great event.

Hello All,

Just a quick update subsequent to Monday’s Launch Meeting.

I’ve heard through the grapevine that Steve MAY have good news for us vis a vis the permit.  I’ll leave it to him to get us an update.

As I mentioned Monday, I’d like to arrange entertainment for the block party.  I just heard back from one of the radio stations that they are interested in doing a remote broadcast so, I can’t confirm yet, but there’s a good chance we’ll have entertainment.
